NEW DELHI: His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay yesterday graced the golden jubilee celebrations of Samyeling Tibetan settlement (Majnuka Tilla) and Ladakh Buddhist Vihara at New Delhi.
Greeting the people on the occasion, His Holiness thanked Delhi Chief Miniser Sheila Dixit for expressing her desire to come to the event. The chief minister couldn’t attend the event due to some unavoidable reasons.
In his address, His Holiness the Dalai Lama said “MajnuTilla Tibetan settlement has completed 50 years of its existence and I congratulate everyone on this memorable occasion.”
His Holiness said the future of Tibet belongs to the younger generation and they should work hard to secure a better future for all.
His Holiness also stressed on the importance of the Tibetan language, saying that Tibetan is the only language through which one can truly understand the deep underlying meaning of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy.
Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay in his address thanked the Indian government and the Indian people for their hospitality and support to the Tibetan people.
The Sikyong said the Tibetan people are able to stand on its own feet due to the generous support of the Indian government.
“The Tibetan leadership as well as the Tibetan movement are both products of India. Tibetan children educated by Indian teachers are now providing leadership to the Tibetan cause. And the Tibetan movement is also based on Indian ethos such as Gandhi ji’s ahimsa or non-violent principles. Therefore, Tibetan people’s success is India’s success as well,” the Sikyong said.
Home Kalon Dolma Gyari thanked Chief Minister Sheila Dixit and other Indian officials for the regularisation of Majnutilla Tibetan colony. To honour their support, His Holiness the Dalai Lama presented them each with a portrait of the Buddha.
The chief guest at the event was Mr Pralhad Singh Sawhney, a Member of Legislative, Delhi. Other guests at the event include Mr Wajahad Habibullah, chairman of Minorities commission and Mr Ngodup Drongchung, Kalon of Security.
The Tibetan settlement at Majnu Tilla was founded in 1963. Popularly known as MT, the settlement was bestowed the name, Samyeling, by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It was recently renamed new Aruna nagar by Chief Minister Sheila Dixit following its regularisation under the law.
