Former Political Prisoner Norlha Ashagtsang Passes Away

DHARAMSHALA: Former Tibetan political prisoner, Norlha Ashagtsang, 49, passed away on 27 December 2011 in Lhasa, reports say.

Norlha hails from Dokham Derge dzong’s Pemashang town in eastern Tibet.

Norlha was arrested on 27 June 2009 when he was protesting against the arrest of two Tibetans, Gyurmey Gonpo and Gyatsang Dorje, by the Chinese police for taking part in a non co-operation movement against the Chinese in Derge town.

Norlha was taken to Chamdo and was sentenced to two years in prison by a local Chinese court.

After a prolonged illness due to injuries sustained in torture sessions in the prison, Norlha was released on medical grounds in 2011.

Even after repeated medical check ups, Norlha was not able to recover fully and passed away at a hospital in Lhasa.

Reports also say that, Bulug, another Tibetan Political prisoner who was arrested in 2009 by the Chinese police, passed away in March 2011 due to severe injuries sustained during his imprisonment.
