’21st Century Would Certainly Be More Peaceful’[Monday, 23 August 2010, 5:10 p.m.]

Dharamshala: His Holiness the Dalai Lama said he is optimistic for a much peaceful and better world in the 21st century, and emphasised India’s role in strengthening the world peace. (watch)The concept of strong self interest “as my nation and your nation”, which prevailed in the early part of 20th century, became the basis of violence and war. But that demarcation reduced in the later part with the advent of world as a single entity due to global economic and environment factors, His Holiness told reporters during a press conference in Manali on last Friday. His Holiness said people became more civilised in their way of thinking in the later part of 20th century. Even though there are handful of mischievous people, majority are fed up with violence. Another factor that he says led to a more peaceful world is due to closer connection between science and spirituality. After new findings on quantum physics, scientists are taking more interest in studying the human mind and emotions. He said many of his friends, who are renowned scientists, consider his explanation on Buddhist teachings as science and not religion.

Maximum utilisation of human intelligence in transforming human emotions through Buddhism and science plays a very important role in developing happier family and society, His Holiness added. There were unhappy events in the early part of this century, but on the whole there is a continuation of the principles that took root in the later part of 20th century. Therefore, I believe there is no doubt that this century will certainly be more peaceful, he said.Role of India in strengthening world peaceHis Holiness the Dalai Lama said India’s stability and its deep rooted democracy could play a vital role in promoting peace in the 21st century. Speaking of religious conflicts in today’s world, we very much need India’s millennia-old tradition of non-violence and religious harmony. So, wherever I go, I always carry these two messages, His Holiness said. His Holiness was in Manali to preach on Gyalsey Thokme Sangpo’s 37 practices of Bodhisattva. His Holiness returned to Dharamsala this morning.
