US President Barack Obama Wins Nobel Peace PrizeFriday, 9 October 2009, 3:07 p.m.


Dharamshala: US President Barack Obama has been chosen for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has announced today.The committee highlighted Mr Obama’s efforts to strengthen international bodies and promote nuclear disarmament.“Very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” the committee said in a citation.“His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.”There were a record 205 nominations for this year’s prize. Zimbabwe’s prime minister and a Chinese dissident had been among the favourites.The prize worth 10 million Swedish crowns ($1.4 million) will be presented to Mr Obama in Oslo on 10 December.
