His Holiness Graces the Shoton Festival

Dharamshala: On 31 March, His Holiness the Dalai Lama graced the opening ceremony of the 12th Shoton, festival of the Tibetan Opera, as the chief guest at the Tibetan Institute of Perfoming Arts. (TIPA)
Present at the ceremony were His Eminence the Karmapa Ugen Thinley Dorjee, all four Kalons of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), the Chair and the Vice-chair of the Assembly of the Tibetan People’s Deputies, the chief justice commissioner, commissioners and the officials of the CTA.
Mrs. Kalsang Y. Dagpo, director of the TIPA, presented the annual report of the TIPA. On behalf of the opera troupes, Mrs. Dagpo thanked His Holiness the Dalai Lama for gracing the event and extended warm welcome to all the guests and audience.
After the welcome address, the pariticipants from various opera associations presented extracts from several operas for about 35 minutes.
The Lhamo performers from various Tibetan settlements like Bhandra, Bylakuppee, Mainpat, Mungod, Kalimpong, Nepal and the Tibetan Homes Foundation, Mussorie, will present opera for the next seven days while the TIPA will present opera on the final day.
The TIPA ground was festooned with colourful flags and a huge Tibetan style tent at the centre, which will be used during opera performance. The opening of opera festival drew a huge crowd of local Tibetans.
